GLC Making-of Daniël, Mats, Sophie, Bob en Bente 4Ve
Meeting 1: 9 January We discussed on the song we want to choose. We decided that this is going to be ‘’Heathens’’ by Twenty One Pilots. Also, we divided the tasks: Daniël Zomer: Editing and actor Mats van Klinken: Filming and editing with Daniël Bente van Balen: Director and actor Bob van de Berg: Actor Sophie Messer: Actor
Ideas: ⦁ Daniël wants to join a ‘’bad’’ group. ⦁ Bad group does not want Daniël in their group. ⦁ Daniël really wants to join. ⦁ Climax. Daniël and the group do a bad thing. ⦁ They escape. ⦁ They are looking at the price of the bad thing. ⦁ Police outside! Panic!
Meeting 2: 16 January Storyline - 4 stages: ⦁ We are introduced with the group of friends who is who. The group consists of 3 friends who are very close and who do not let other people in. ⦁ We are introduced with Daniël, the outsider. He wants to fit in with the group but he isn’t. ⦁ Daniël is bullied and hurt by the group of friends because they do not let him in. ⦁ Daniël gives up trying and doesn’t want to come back again.
Meeting 3: 23 January Here was suppposed to be the freytags pyramid.
Meeting 4: 26 January
Answers to the 5 questions: Q1 = In the beginning of the song, the pitch of the singer is very low. He does this to create suspense, excitement and danger. The beat and tempo is around 50BPM. The beat in Heathens is not easy to find and so it does not have a factor of excitement. The rhythm in Heathens has a very dark character. The music is organized in an easy way just like its rhythm. It’s slow and dark and it isn’t appealing to us physically, like we want to move our feet. Throughout the song, the melody changes from low to very high at the end, where the climax is. We have shown this in our diagram above.
Q2 = In our film, we are not going to follow the lyrics. We decided on a completely different storyline. We agreed on this, because in Heathens, there is much repetition and not a great message. Heathens is a song based on people who are heathens and so explaining how they are like. We are going to use this, because in our video clip we are going to emphasise on the characteristics of heathens and all their bad habits.
Q3: Our song is ‘Heathens’. The definition of Heathens is: “of or relating to people or nations that do not acknowledge the God of the Bible”. People with a religion, e.g. Christianity see people with another religion, e.g. Islam, as bad and the other way around the same. We use this as a metaphor: we represent heathens and we do bad things. We also use a motive in our video clip: in the film we are a group of people who do bad things. We use a logo for our group: a fox and we put the logo everywhere we go. A fox represents slyness and that's exactly what we are.
Q4: In our film we have a group of friends and an outsider. The outsider wants to join the group, but he is refused. At a certain moment he has to do tests to see if he can be in the group. In the film we want to show this tests and later also the big burglary that the group, now with the outsider, wants to do. At the end we also show the arrest of the group by the police. Of course, we film from the camera. We want to show all the characters, so it’s not that as a viewer you only see the experiences of one person. We have an idea that sometimes we’d like to film from Daniël’s perspective, so that we, as the viewers, can see what he feels, sees and does.
Q5: We haven’t filmed anything yet, so at the moment we don’t know if we want to use a film style and if so, which one. Some film styles do not fit our theme at all, like Bollywood and musical. Film noir does fit our theme, since the group does bad things and then black and white fits the theme. But when we’ll start editing we’ll choose if we want a film style for our film and if so, which o

Evaluation:
I did the editing part and I had the main acting role. It went quite well but unfortunately I could not use all the filmed content because the song was too short. During the filming we also changed the script many times because different ideas were coming up multiple times.
